Whether you grow your own food or buy your produce from the grocery store you need to wash it. Our experience shows fruits and vegetables from the grocery store have a chemical taste surrounding it. While we don’t use chemicals on our own garden, there is plenty of dirt and sometimes bugs on our produce, so washing is always essential.
As we lean more toward a natural lifestyle, we prefer an all natural fruit vegetable wash.
Below we will give you our homemade recipe for cleaning fruits and veggies. But if you aren’t up for making your own you can purchase a great natural fruit vegetable wash solution from us through Young Living. There are two different types. A veggie spray, which is great for fruit on-the-go or a veggie soak, which is great for cleansing large amounts of produce. The spray is made for spritzing your fruit or veggies no matter where you are. The soak is for soaking big batches of fruit at one time. This soak has DiGize, Purification & Thieves essential oil blends. If this option is what you’re looking for check out our essential oils page. If not, keep reading…
We clean all of our produce in batches. First we tackle the strawberries, then move onto grapes, blueberries, apples, tomatoes, zucchini, squash and other garden varieties. Cleaning each fruit or vegetable category helps stay organized because if I throw it all in the fridge or keep it all on the counter, I don’t remember what I’ve cleaned and what I haven’t. Once you clean it and place it in the fridge there’s no second guessing, if it’s in the fridge, it’s clean! . Other produce like apples, tomatoes, zucchini, or squash sit on the counter until we clean it. Then it is stored in the fridge, freezer or canned for long term storage.
Distilled or filtered water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 TBS lemon juice (0r 5-7 drops of Lemon Vitality essential oil)
We take a large plastic container or bowl and fill it with filtered water (generally from the refrigerator). Then we dump in the fruit. Fit as many as you can in this one container. It is possible you will need to do more than one round if you bought or harvested an abundance of fruit.
Now that fruit is floating in water toss in the baking soda. Next throw in a splash of lemon juice and stir well. Set your timer for five minutes. It needs to soak that long for the dirt to fall off, the baking soda to neutralize any chemicals and for the lemon juice to preserve the fruit.
After the timer beeps, grab a deep colander and pour the fruit and water mixture into. Be sure you’re at the sink when you do this! Run cold water and rinse the fruit, then lay it on a towel to dry. Once the fruit dries pack it back into the original containers, or find one from your cupboard to store it in.
You’ll find when you wash with this all natural fruit vegetable wash your produce will not only taste better, but will be more vibrant in color and last longer!
