Grandma Loda’s Southern Chocolate Pie Recipe with Meringue
Chocolate pie with meringue brings back fond memories on our grandparent’s farm. Grandma Loda stayed in the kitchen cooking up meals and desserts. I seldom remember her being anywhere else. She made the best food.
Our family get-togethers consisted of stories from the past, laughter, cards and great food! It’s a time we will always cherish.
Her recipe is a fabulous one, but contained more sugar than this SpoonieChick can bare. So I went on a quest and adapted her recipes to fit our lifestyle. This is a simple recipe and I hope you’ll love it as much as we do!
First I’d like to say we don’t always have the energy to make pie shells from scratch, so we bought ours in the freezer section at Walmart. I know it’s not the homesteading thing to do, but I’m tired.
Also, this recipe makes TWO decadent southern chocolate pies!
So be sure you purchase a double package of pie crusts, or make two from your own homemade recipe.
I’d also like to point out there are many ways to adjust this recipe even further. If you need gluten free simply make your own gluten free pie crusts.
If you have dairy restrictions you may substitute milk with coconut milk. We prefer to use coconut milk rather than almond milk when needing a creamy consistency.
You may also substitute coconut oil for the butter needed.
And of course if you are trying to stay away from artificial sweeteners just use sugar 😉
One of the greatest parts about using grandma Loda’s recipes is there is plenty of room for substitutions and adaptations to meet your family’s needs!
